Half of a Yellow Sun is the second offering by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, a young author from Nigeria with an wonderful, unique voice. I thoroughly enjoyed her first novel, Purple Hibiscus, and her second novel did not disappoint.
Half a Yellow Sun takes place in the early 1960's, during Biafra's fight for independence from Nigeria. It follows the fortunes and lives of several individuals from many different walks of life as they each experience the effects of the war and genocide. I didn't know much about the struggle for Biafra before, nor about the Igbo people. I had no clue, really. All I knew was that children had been starving in Biafra when I was young. This book was really eye-opening.
The characters were quite well fleshed out and interesting. I really cared about them. The plot was perfectly paced. From the first page I was hooked.
Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has just won the The Orange Broadband Prize for Fiction for Half of a Yellow Sun. Well-deserved, I say!
This will (finally) shortly be on its way to Amusedbythis, as promised ages and ages ago!

It has taken me quite awhile to get to this book but I am glad that I did. Like MissTree, the only thing that I knew about Biafra was that the United States had come to the aid of starving children. The book was engrossing, and yet a pretty fast read. Thanks for sharing!
