Notes from a Small Island

After nearly 2 decades in Britain, Bryson decides to move back to the States for a while. Before leaving he takes one last trip around Britain.
I'd read Mother Tongue and A Short History of Nearly Everything but I'm not so keen on travelogues so I wasn't sure if I'd like this. But I did. The only thing about Bill Bryson that annoys me is when he goes on about "Why do women ...". Invariably it's something I don't do - am I supposed to feel less of a woman because I don't feel fabrics or don't like shopping? That kind of blanket statement really irks me.
But, on the other hand, I'll forgive him anything (blame that kind of opinion on his age) because in all other ways I adore his writing.
And I've discovered my local library has a biography of WJC Scott-Bentinck, which I can't wait to read - he sounds fascinating!
Posted to lukutuoli today (surface) - sorry for the wait, I was going to send you The Lost Continent as well, but I see someone is already sending it to you. :)

OMG what a surprise!! Thank you so much for this RABCK, I really like Bill Bryson :) His travel book about Australia is my favourite so far, but I'm curious to read about Britain as well. Hugs, VeganMedusa!
I had high expectations of this book, because I really enjoyed Down Under by the same author. This was a disappointment, however, Bryson didn't make Britain sound interesting at all!
My favourite parts were those telling about the places, I've visited myself: London, Manchester, Liverpool. Perhaps I would have enjoyed the whole travel more, if the other places would have been familiar to me as well ?!
I have a couple of other Bryson's books waiting in my TBR-shelf, let's see if I'm able to concentrate on them better...

I have read this one before in Finnish, so it will be interesting to read in English this time. Picked it up at the local meetup today.
I have read this one in Finnish a few years back. Can't say that I would remember a lot of it but somehow reading this in English felt different than the Finnish translation. Bryson loves to exaggerate and complain and that might be a little bit of annoying at times. On the other hand, he praises those places and things he likes which gives balance. I still wonder how he manages to choose the worst hotels to stay in...
I picked up this book from our local meeting. Many thanks!

I read the book quite a while ago. Still, I remember skipping couple of chapters. I expected the book to be hilarious. However, after a while Bryson began to annoy me with his negative attitude and exaggerating style, although there were many funny observations and insights. Bryson also tended to repeat himself... quite a lot. In my opinion this was not his best piece of work.
