"Jane, Always expect great things. Joseph"
'Plucked from obscurity as a blacksmith's apprentice by a mysterious benefactor, Pip receives a gentleman's education in the London of the 1820s. He leaves behind Joe, the gentle giant, and his sharp-tongued sister, Mrs Joe, as he begins a new life of idleness. Only two others move between these contrasting worlds: Jaggers, the sinister lawyer who acts for Pip's benefactor, and Estella, the beautiful adopted daughter of rich Miss Havisham. Each of them shows Pip a different London - the cells of Newgate where Jaggers plies his trade and the society drawing rooms where Estella is courted by the insufferable Bentley Drummle. But can Estella possibly be part of Pip's 'great expectations'?

Turned up in the mail today, thanks heaps cat207!
Mr TQD was less than impressed though, he had to study Great Expectations for his HSC and has never quite recovered. (Even though it was more than 20 years ago...) I'd write down what he said, only I don't think I can spell "ickthhhhpt" very well.

Picked up at the Sydney Meetup, Crown Hotel. It will be a little while before I get to it.
Sorry that it has taken me some time to pick this book up. I had not read it before and was surprised by the number of people who said to me "I read that at school". I'm glad that I didn't because I saved it till now. The book was really enjoyable although I found Pip's self-centred behaviour frustrating (as no doubt I was supposed to). The ending was unrealistic but hey, it was fun.
