Just finished this book this evening. I enjoyed it although it reminded me a lot of the History of Love (I liked Extremely Loud much better though). I guess I'm reading too much of the same type of book these days.

I thought the book was poignant and well written given the subject matter.

I put this book down at a point where I could not figure out who was who. And I almost didn't pick it up again. But Foer had done such a good job of making me care about Oskar, a bright quirky child, trying to come to terms with the worst day of his life (the day his dad died) that I picked it up and kept reading. Then I couldn't put it down again. The grandfather's story is particularly poignant. There are so many layers of symbolism in this story-a person that can't talk, a person that won't hear, a person who pretends not to see, a life story written on a typewriter without a ribbon or maybe just using the space bar-that it would be wonderful to discuss.

As I read the parts of this book that were narrated by the 9-year-old boy, I couldn't help but to laugh out loud several times. I have a 9-year-old daughter of my own, so I could see how the reasoning of this boy and the way that he related things was written much like a 9-year-old would think. The pictures and illustrations also made it a little more interesting. At times, though, the book seemed to ramble on and on so much that it became boring.

I'm sending this as a surprise RABCK to judygreeneyes. She asked for children's books to send to Nepal on the forums, so I am including this book from her wishlist in with the box of children's books that I am mailing.

I hope you enjoy it!

Wow, thanks ladybug74! This was a complete surprise, and one I've been dying to read! Thanks also for sending the books for my box going to Nepal. The box arrived in the last few days while I was on business travel in Korea, so it was such a nice surprise to come home to! What I nice selection of books you sent for Nepal -- I'm sure the kids will love them. I caught a cold while traveling too, so I really needed a nice surprise!

I finally got around to reading this book.

Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close" was an amazing story, very possibly the best I'll read this year. Foer managed to include both the bombing of Dresden in WWII and the bombing of the World Trade Center in 2001 in the same story. Nine-year-old Oskar Schell is a fascinating character and the narrator of much of the story. He's a genius, an inventor with a wild imagination, a son who is mourning the loss of his dad, and a lonely little boy who feels everything intensely. I knew this would be a great story, but I am still amazed at how great it was. Highly recommended!

Got this book from judygreeneyes and just got around to reading it this summer since I'm so busy during the school year. This is a fantastic book, full of layers and human emotions. I read it in a week once I got started. I took it to work a couple of days ago and I've already promised to pass it along to my co-worker after my mom reads it.
