i enjoyed reading this while volunteering in guatemala. it certainly imposed in me the desire to settle down and live sutainably and intentionally with my surroundings. this retelling of richard proenneke's lifestyle certainly presents a lesson in patience. ironically i am now patiently bumbling my way through life with the conflicting desires to travel and settle down. it is neat to hear how richard proenneke becomes part of the land around him, observing and interacting with the animals and very rarely interacting with other humans. as much as i am drawn to separating myself from the rest of humanity to become part of my natural environment, i think i would have been lonely living with only the caribou, bears, moose, and endless expanses of alaskan mountains. the few pictures in this book are incredible, and create a visual more impressive to me than the written descriptions of the land. the book is a mellow read, but it is also exciting - some days more than others. i really got into the descriptions of the carpentry work and the food. I learned quite a bit about the versatility of traditional hand tools in construction, and about cooking slow foods. i was always hungry during the descriptions of food. overall "one man's wilderness" was more educational and entertaining than i expected.
