The first book of the "Incarnations of Immortality" series, where ordinary people by incident (wrong time, wrong place, you know the story ;-) have to take over the role (or "job") of a personified natural force (Death, in the case of this book) and struggle to perform it.

Quite funny & a good read. Fantasy with philosophical sidesteps, dangerously verging on the serious.
