i found this book sitting on a table in a coffee shop on the campus of the university in lawrence when i was visiting for kcactf, a college acting conference/competition held each year on the regional and national level. i was acquiring some much needed caffeine with my great friend kelsey, who spotted the book. "it's about new york!" she said, which was of great interest to me as i am an artist and plan to move there one day. she handed the book to me, claiming that it would be a more fascinating for me than for her. although this occurred in january, i did not read the book until early june, when i was studying abroad in rome. it was very interesting to read a book about one of the most important cities in the us while simultaneously studying in the city in rome that is perhaps one of the more equivalent when it comes to interesting history, people, and activity. i generally enjoyed helene's writing, and as the book is small it was a lovely companion on my train rides on the weekend. the book sits beside me now, but i plan on leaving it in the villa sciarra, a gorgeous park where i walk and study in the mornings before my cinema class at the american university of rome. the idea of an italian retrieving the book is a very attractive one, as i have come to love and appreciate the culture in a way i never imagined. i'd love for someone very far from new york, perhaps living in a large city like rome, to read and enjoy the book with an appreciation of the world where i come from. good luck and thanks.
