This book was actually a lot better than I expected. I tend to treat books that are as overhyped as this one with a bit of wariness, and, having read Roddy Doyle's 'Paddy Clarke Ha Ha Ha' a few years ago, I was worried this might be just a copycat cashing in on that book's popularity, but I was pleasantly surprised.
The book is very moving, following the struggles of the author's poverty-stricken family in the slums of Limerick. He does a great job of writing through the naive eyes of himself as a child (there is a beautiful passage where his father tells him that a new baby brother was left by an angel on the seventh step of the stairs, so he spends hours sitting on that step, telling the angel his worries). An easy read, but by no means light and fluffy - I was feeling seriously depressed by the end!!!
This is such a lovely brand new copy that I don't want to risk releasing it into the wild, so I think I'll hang onto it until the next meetup, and hopefully pass it on then, but if anyone would like me to send it to them, PM me.
