"Like every nine-year-old girl, Meena can't wait to grow up and break free from her parents, but as the daughter of the only Punjabi family in the mining village of Tollington, her daily struggle for independence is different from most. She wants fishfingers and hips, not just chapati and dhal; she wants an English Christmas, not the usual interminable Punjabi festivities - but more than anything, more than mini-skirts and the freedom to watch Opportunity Knocks, Meena wants to roam the backyards of working-class Tollington with feisty Anita Rutter and her gang."

Got this at the main London bookcrossing meeting in Trafalgar Square - I was expecting it to be a bit grim - actually it's very human and has a lot of sympathetic characters.

I loved this book - some real comic moments coupled with thought provoking scenes.

Found it in the Roebuck in Hampstead, while doing a pub quiz.
Plan to leave it in the library of BPP Law School.

Funny, well-written book.

It was quirky, and hard to put down - I ended up liking Meena despite my initial impressions of her.
