Blurb taken from back cover:

Dear Reader,

If you have just picked up this book, then it is not too late to put it back down. Like the previous books in A SERIES OF UNFORTUNATE EVENTS, there is nothing to be found in these pages but misery, despair, and discomfort, and you still have time to choose something else to read.

Within the chapters of this story, Violet, Klaus, and Sunny Baudelaire encounter a darkened staircase, a red herring, some friends in a dire situation, three mysterious initials, a liar with an evil scheme, a secret passageway, and parsley soda.

I have sworn to write down these tales of the Baudelaire orphans so the general public will know each terrible thing that has happened to them, but if you decide to read something else instead, you will save yourself from a heapful of horror and woe.

With all due respect,

Lemony Snicket

Surprise - Surprise
The book 4-6 arrived today. Thanks for shipping cross-patch. :)
I haven't read the series yet. I will have a few free days around Easter. Then I hope to finish my current read by Haruki Murakami. It's a big one...
Then I'm heading to Violet, Klaus and Sunny so that they can be sent to the next participant in due time.

I was really disappointed about the end!
... SPOILER ...
Not that I insisted on a happy ending. I think this wouldn't have fit anway. And I really appreciate that finding a proper end wouldn't have been easy at all. But this actual end didn't satisfy me at all! ... and I wonder that this is the last book in the series... it seems that it could have been going on and on and on for ages like this. And I don't like it.
Also, what about Beatrix???? I really liked these kind of hints 'bout the author in all the other books... but since Esmé was talking about her now - I believe it would have been nice to learn more about this in the end.
But now - this mentioning of Beatrix is just dull.... (better would have been either to leave it as a secret - or reveal everything at the end)
... and speaking of it... what about the place where the Baudelaire house stood... is this a coincidence or what??? It didn't sound like that. Disappointing as well.....

Anyway - I enjoyed reading the series and I will forward the whole bunch of books today to the next reader.

Those poor Baudelaire siblings can't get a break no matter how hard they try. I do hope things work out for them by the end of the series and they are able to rescue their friends. The first 6 books are now ready to mail to the next participant in the spiral.

I also learned a new word from this book. I had no idea what ersatz meant until I read this book. :)

Books 6, 7, 8, & 9 all arrived safely in the mail. I will be reading them one at a time and sending separately to the next reader as they are mostly hardbacks and travelling overseas. This means it will take a bit longer to get through the latter in the series. Thank you so much for sharing with me and I will pass along these sad little tales as soon as I can. Happy Bookcrossing!

Journal Entry 23 by HunterRyu from West Norriton, Pennsylvania USA on Tuesday, August 25, 2009
Finished this book, and it was a bit more frustrating than some of the others in the series. By the time the auction bidding was going on I seriously slapped myself in the forehead due to lack of crime/problem solving by the children. Jerome's lack of backbone also just AUUUUUUGH. Esme's hint at Beatrice, I must learn more about her! Overall I enjoyed it, but these stories aren't meant to be happy times.

Journal Entry 27 by AgdaAgulina from Helsinki, Uusimaa / Nyland Finland on Thursday, April 15, 2010
My reading tempo for these books have clearly slowed down very much, after chapter here and there over the last months I finally finished this book as well. Somehow I don't find them as amusing as the earlier ones, but with some other characters added I guess it is still somewhat interesting - though terribly repeating the same story.

However, I will not give up, after all this is quite a different reading. The 7th book was lost in the way, but another copy is hopefully arriving soon...
