Blurb taken from back cover:

Dear Reader,

I'm sorry to say that the book you are holding in your hands is extremely unpleasant. It tells an unhappy tale about three very unlucky children. Even though they are charming and clever, the Baudelaire siblings lead lives filled with misery and woe. From the very first page of this book when the children are at the beach and receive terrible news, continuing on through the entire story, disaster lurks at their heels. One might say they are magnets for misfortune.

In this short book alone, the three youngsters encounter a greedy and repulsive villain, itchy clothing, a disastrous fire, a plot to steal their fortune, and cold porridge for breakfast.

It is my sad duty to write down these unpleasant tales, but there is nothing stopping you from putting this book down at once and reading something happy, if you prefer that sort of thing.

With all due respect,

Lemony Snicket

Personal notes:

I'm glad to see this book making the rounds. People must really like it! As for you, Cross-patch, what do you mean by a cosy return to childhood?! Did you not read the summary???

I can tell these are going to be good fun reads, and definitely a nice accompaniment to my serious academic reading. I read this today whilst taking breaks from study, and although I want to read the others, I think I will pace myself and read a book in between!

I *loved* the illustrations, and the explanations of what the "big words" meant were very cool - yey for increasing children's vocabulary!

Journal Entry 10 by wingCross-patchwing from Leicester, Leicestershire United Kingdom on Saturday, January 5, 2008
I've been hijacked by Lemony Snicket! Thanks, Anglersrest, for this lovely surprise. I think I deserve a cosy return to childhood, since I've spent most of the last 2 weeks away, emptying my dad's house - and that was most of my childhood, albeit yonks ago!

Journal Entry 11 by wingCross-patchwing from Leicester, Leicestershire United Kingdom on Thursday, January 31, 2008
But you don't know my childhood!!

My vocab is going to improve, I can see. It WAS fun to read a nasty children's book, and I'll race through the next 5 and get them off to Germany to continue their journeys. Thank you everybody for letting them do the rounds.

Lemony Snicket arrived safe and sound. Thanks for shipping, Cross-patch and also many thanks to NMReader for this spiral.
I already know the first book - but I definately will read it once more. I'm really looking forward to reading the whole series now! :)
... to be continued

22-March-08
Well - I already knew the first book of the series. Nevertheless I enjoyed reading it. Now I'm in the loop of the story again. I will make something to eat now and then I will start straight away with The reptile room. I'm curious to find out what happens next.
I also already asked for the next address. And the whole series will be shipped to ladybug once I'm finished - I guess next week.

Journal Entry 13 by ladybug74 from Dothan, Alabama USA on Monday, April 14, 2008
I received the first 6 books in this series in the mail today from Mary-T. The package was torn pretty badly in several places, but was still held together enough that the 6 books were all there. I look forward to reading this series. I have actually read this first book before, but it's been so long that I wanted to read it again before resuming the series. Thanks NMReader for sharing and thanks QueenBoadicia for giving the book so the spiral could be continued! I will journal each book as I finish it.

Journal Entry 14 by ladybug74 from Dothan, Alabama USA on Tuesday, April 15, 2008
I read this whole book in a few hours time, but it was a cute book. I think the reason I didn't complete the series the first time was because I had just watched the movie with my daughter and pretty much knew what was going to happen before I read it. It's been quite a while since we watched the movie, so I did enjoy this book this time around. I look forward to reading the remainder of the series. I have sent a PM to NMReader to ask where she wants me to send the books next, since I am the last participant in the spiral.

I loved that there were "big words" throughout this book, followed by simple explanations for what they mean. This would be a great series for a child to help increase his/her vocabulary. My 8-year-old is always asking me "what does this word mean." I think she or a child her age could actually learn some new words by reading this book, though she was not interested when I asked her if she'd like to read them while they are here. :( I think the idea of reading a whole series of books seems overwhelming to her right now.

I loved this little book! I stayed ticked at Count Olaf through the whole thing, but of course, that's the point! It was a fast read, and yes, as usual it is better than the movie. (When has the book NOT been better? Probably very little of the time.)
I am waiting to hear from the next person in line.....I sent the message yesterday. Since it's probably going out of the country, and it's a rather small book, I might wait to send two at once to help with the cost of postage.
I can't wait to get the next one!

Looking forward to read more!
Now it is on it´s way to AgdaAgulina!

Journal Entry 31 by AgdaAgulina from Helsinki, Uusimaa / Nyland Finland on Tuesday, February 17, 2009
Bad beginning in Prague! I got the book from post yesterday, but read it already, with much joy - tried to keep some breaks, but it was not easy. What a nasty book! I especially liked the mentioning of the group of FINNISH FEMALE PIRATES, and the world of theatre so close to me, with ALL THAT. Freaks and fascination. Will this continue... I am itching for more!

Special thanks for Deepswamp for beautifully stamped package and suprise-book! These are the high-light moments of bookcrossing!

Oooh, what a creepy and strange 'kids' story! Definitely for kids but appeals to the macabre in all of us adults for sure...

Thanks for passing this around, look forward to the next episode!
