From the Publisher
The Reader is both a literary surprise and a moral challenge: a riveting, provocative, and deeply moving novel about a young boy's erotic awakening in a passionate, clandestine love affair with an older woman, and what happens to them both when the secrets in her past are revealed. Fifteen-year-old Michael Berg becomes ill on the way home from school. A woman takes care of him. Later, the boy arrives at her home with a bunch of flowers to thank her. And then comes back again. Hanna is the first woman he has ever desired. But there is something slightly off-key about her. His questions about her family and her life go unanswered. One day Hanna simply disappears. Michael's life goes on, but he can't forget her. Years later, as a law student observing a trial in Germany, Michael is shocked to realize that the person in the dock is Hanna. The woman he had loved so passionately is a criminal. Much about her behavior during the trial makes no sense. But then, suddenly and terribly, it does — Hanna is not only obliged to answer for a horrible crime, she is also desperately concealing an even deeper secret. As the past erupts into the present — both Michael's past with Hanna, and the past of Germany itself — Michael must accept that he will never be free of either of them.

Mailing tomorrow as a surprise RABCK (Random Act of BookCrossing Kindness) to MandaJo
I think this one was mailed to me long ago. I brought it along on vacation because it looked like a quicker read. It was for me... finished it in two days... but I'm still reeling a little after finishing it last night. Beautifully written, incredibly interesting, though just a bit depressing and not quite my cup of tea. I'm going to try to leave this somewhere while I'm in Arkansas on vacation.
I was thrilled to find this at the OBCZ I manage today. I actually just read this a little while back. I thought it was interesting, but a little hard to get into. I'd like to pass this on in a bookbox since the copy I have of this book will need some repair before it can go back out into the world. I will repair that copy and leave it at the OBCZ in this copy's place.

What a marvelous book. I loved the way it was written. Beautiful, lonely, sad. I was so captured that I (practically) dropped everything today to read it through.

Wow1 thanks so much! It's one I've been wanting to read!
This is on its way to another BCer with it on her Wishlist. It's been on my TBR shelf far too long, and I have so many other books scheduled to read that it may be some time before I get to this one.
Enjoy!
What a great surprise! I received this last Friday or Saturday. Perfect timing as I am leaving on vacation to England and Ireland on Thursday!
Thanks so much! :)
Thanks so much! :)
I really enjoyed this book. I did think that the relationship between Michael and Hanna was a little disturbing. It was a shame that that one relationship affected his future relationships so much. She had quite a pull. This was a great book to read on my plane ride from NY to England. Thank you so much for sending my way. :)
Released as part of a first sentences VBB - Enjoy!
