Sending book to my sister, Moody-Blue, to be included in a humor bookbox.

Journal Entry 5 by Moody-Blue from Montrose, Colorado USA on Thursday, May 31, 2007
Received for inclusion in an upcoming bookbox. Listing it as Avail 'til then though, in case someone has a burning desire to read it!

Journal Entry 6 by Moody-Blue from Montrose, Colorado USA on Saturday, June 9, 2007
I have my own copy of this that I can put in the bookbox, so I'm sending this to GrizzlyGirl in trade.

This is Laurie Notaro's first book, and I'm sure glad it wasn't the first of hers that I read! It's about years around her college graduation and involves a few major themes - drinking, smoking, drugs, pubic hair, violent disgusting emissions from both ends of human and animal bodies - absolutely none of which I find funny.

I wanted to stop reading, but felt wrong about giving a bad review to a book I didn't completely read... Then, in consecutive sentences, she professes love for Greg Almann and slams my favorite band Journey. Minus one star. She mentions Phoenix's Sheriff Joe Arpayo, but gives no context. A missed opportunity for a funny story, so I'm disappointed. THEN there's the scene with the dead cat she and a friend made a marionette out of. That's it, I'm done.

Journal Entry 7 by GrizzlyGirl from Fraser, Michigan USA on Tuesday, June 19, 2007
Really looking forward to reading this one, as I just finished another one of her books, Autobiography of a Fat Bride.

Journal Entry 8 by GrizzlyGirl from Fraser, Michigan USA on Monday, October 8, 2007
I LOVE Laurie Notaro! Freakin hilarious!!

Journal Entry 9 by jenptcfan from Mechanicsville, Virginia USA on Sunday, October 14, 2007
I received this yesterday. I can't wait to read it. I'll be sure to read it and pass it along quickly.

I haven't made it to the post office to send you the trade yet, but I have it ready to go. I'll probably send it out this week.

Journal Entry 10 by jenptcfan from Mechanicsville, Virginia USA on Tuesday, October 23, 2007
I finished this tonight.

I didn't know what to expect going into this book. I just thought the title was cute and thought it sounded funny.

I think I would enjoy her humor more in smaller quantities. A whole book of it was a little much. I didn't think most of it was funny, but it had its moments.

Here's a part I liked:

So then she made me enter the names of all the dead dogs we've ever had, like Bambi, Pookie, Ginger, and Brandy. "This is dangerous, Mom. You've been subconsciously naming your pets after strippers," I said, but she just ignored me. "You'll be a pervert magnet." -- page 206

I'm going to include this in round 2 of my X Chromosome Bookbox.

Thanks for sharing.

This book was so funny! I like the way she looks at things in life, I really enjoyed it. My husband heard me laughing so much that now he wants to read it, so when he is done then I will send to Classicfox. I hope everyone enjoys it as much as I did!

Journal Entry 16 by Lumbermoose from Woodstock, Georgia USA on Sunday, March 30, 2008
So I was going to quietly read this one today and then give it back to JennyC for her Bookring, but I see that she made it official and added me to the list. I read this book today - basically, so the guys at work wouldn't give me any grief. My wife was laughing so hard while she read this that I had to find out what was so funny. I thought it was hilarious! Laurie is "just one of the guys" as far as I'm concerned.

Passing back to Jenny for her Bookring.

Hmmmm, well...although I'm glad I read this because I won't rest until I've read all of Laurie's books (lol), I have to say I was disappointed. While mildly amusing, it certainly didn't make me laugh out loud although it did get a chuckle or two out of me. I thought WE THOUGHT YOU WOULD BE PRETTIER hysterical but maybe her books get better after this one; this one being her first. I feel badly giving her a so-so review but gotta be honest. There are two more of hers to read so I'm still a fan at this point. THANK YOU for including me in this ring! Got NMReader's addy who responded right away and this will start making its way to her tomorrow. Happy reading all!

Entry #54 for the 2008 Keep Them Moving Challenge

Journal Entry 38 by AgnesXNitt from Godmanchester, Cambridgeshire United Kingdom on Sunday, January 4, 2009
Received in the post on Saturday 3rd January - what a great way to start the new year :)
Thanks for hosting this ring JennyC1230 and thanks to Chich for posting on - yay Facebook Bookcrossing hookups too!
Looking forward to this one, as I was very kindly sent a RABCK of another of her books 'We Thought You Would Be Prettier' by a BXer when I was having a tough time last autumn and it cheered me considerably!

Journal Entry 39 by AgnesXNitt from Godmanchester, Cambridgeshire United Kingdom on Monday, January 5, 2009
Oh My Goodness - another fantasic laugh out loud book from Ms Notaro! I read this throughout Sunday 4th January, laughing at some highly inappropriate moments while my parents were talking to our guests for Sunday lunch :S She is so funny! I really, really, really enjoyed this book and if I haven't already added the rest of her works to my wishlist, I will be doing so *immediately*! Although I have never been drunk (no, *really* I haven't, and no one ever believes me!) I have seen and assisted enough drunk friends and colleagues to know what she is talking about. And that mad room of hers that is a dumping ground! And visiting the doctor with no underwear below the plimsoll line because her dogs ate it all and she can't be doing buying more that led to her inadvertantly flashing her doctor!! And her 'Well Woman' check with the freezing cold medical instrument that turned into a group activity! And her memories of being told about her 'blossiming' time by a very scary and unforgiving teacher who ordered her charges to 'use the belt!!!' as she swears that self adhesive panty liners etc are 'just a fad' and won't last! So very funny, a bit gross in parts but really, despite her claims of being 'dumb', Ms Notaro seems to have a good time doing whatever she feels like doing :) The incident of picking her drunken and half naked female friend off a strangers front garden, pouring her back in her bra and picking gravel off her back reminds me strangely of an incident with a friend of mine at Butlin's Minehead many moons ago...
PM'ing piolha in Portugal for her addy today.
Thank you so much again for hosting this marvellous ring Jenny - much appreciated!

Since the organizer wanted folks to move this along within a month I moved this to the top of my ring/ray pile. The story was okay, she seemed to try really hard to be funny. There were some funny parts in it but I just don't find folks that do stupid things when they are drunk to be that funny. I would try another one of her books, maybe this one was just a bit off.

I'll try to have this on its way to the next reader in the next couple of days.
