The Last Kingdom

This was a very light, "boys'-own" type of read. Lots of battles between the Vikings and the Saxons where the villains aren't always as clear-cut as you would think. I found the characters a bit two-dimensional. I'd have liked a bit more depth to them. However, it was light reading and quite enjoyable. It's the story of Uhtred, an English boy orphaned at the age of 10 who is captured by a Dane and taught the Viking ways. Alfred, the King of Wessex, is the ruler of the only kingdom to survive the Danish incursions. Uhtred is re-captured by the Saxons, led by Alfred, and kept at his court because of his knowledge of the Danes. He leads Alfred's army against the greatest of Viking leaders where he discovers his true allegiance.
