I used to really think Mr Rankin was a funny writer. Admittedly I hadnt picked up one of his books in about ten years, but still, reading tastes dont change that much do they? Well this was awful, I hated it so much I couldnt read any further than page 30. ( Although it does pick up a rating of 2 for the occasional funny joke.)The characterisation was bad, really bad. I think he is trying to ape the sci-fi/adventure genre, but what comes across are lazy, unimaginative steriotypes...eg our lady lead is introduced
"The new assistants name was Anna Gotting and she was a rare beauty. Blonde of hair. Blue of Eye. Independent of spirit. Seventeen years of age and five foot eight of height. Valid arguments against the inclusion of such a being in the list of the twenty three really wonderful things have yet to be heard."
Now I have nothing against imaginary teenage blondies, but the narritive voice is clearly not envisionaing me as its reader as I would have no use for one in my 23 really wonderful things in the world.
Perhaps I am merely too old and hetrosexually female to get the appeal of this book. I remember loving Armeggedon, which he wrote with Terry Pratchett (proper master of this kind of book.). I am planning to get rid of it anyway, the wild release way, so I will see if I can place it in the way of someone who will appreciate it more.
