On Beauty

I haven't enjoyed her other books so much, in fact, I couldn't really see what all the hoopla about her was all about. But I thoroughly enjoyed this one. Aside from being an entertaining read, though, I just wonder how accurate a depiction it is of an American multi-racial family, seeing as how she is an Asian from the UK, how close did she come?
Will be posted off to bookcrosser CynthiaA who had it listed on her wish list.
Enjoy!

Arrived this morning! Thank you so much MizFiloos!
It took me too long to get to this book. And, sadly, I kind feel let down by it. While I can appreciate Ms. Smith's skill as a writer, this book left me feeling unfulfilled -- like I missed something big in the plot that would have helped me appreciate it more.
This book is going to be going out as a bookray, as follows

I really enjoyed reading this. The complexity of family life brought beautifully to life through Smiths' witty and insightful writing. Thak you for sharing this with me.
Posted on to Oedie. Enjoy!
It arrived today, thank you, mafarrimond! I'm very curious, I'll read it as soon as I can!
(And thank you very much for the lovely Christmas card!)

I finished it a couple of days ago. I thought it was very entertaining and I enjoyed it very much. It was very well written and I like how in the end it all came together. I had been wondering about all the different plots, but I shouldn't have!
I'm glad I read it!

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:
On the way in the States.
Wow! This took a month to find its way here. I look forward to reading it. It will be a while...I have a few up before this one.
I'm sorry this took so long. I really enjoyed the story and I thought the author's writing was masterful. A great book! I'll send it on to someone with it on the Wishliist.
This one is continuing on its journey, extending the Ray. Enjoy your travels, little book!
Arrived today and will start it soon.
This book took me forever to get through and I just could not get into it as much as I wanted to. The plot seemed to be fragmented such as where I am in the middle of one or I'm just starting one. The characters were annoying and the attempt at the dialect and diction was poor. The ending was a total let down and left me mildly confused, as if there should have been more to be read in the story. Zadie Smith was part of the Babel Series for the Just Buffalo Literary Center at Kleinhans Music Hall here in Buffalo,NY on March 21, 2012, and unfortunately I was out of state at the time and I would have attended this series as it might have given me a different perspective about the author and would have loved to get this book signed by the author.

The book arrived safely in Cape Town. Thanks for shipping it, angelface46! Thanks as well to MizFiloos for registering the book, and CynthiaA, valpete and ravencat for continuing the ray.
I have three books ahead of this one, but will get to it as soon as I can. Fortunately I'm the last on the list so far, so there is no great rush. Once done, I plan to ray it forward.
This is my first Zadie Smith and I'm looking forward to reading it.

On Beauty is a rich snapshot of contemporary life as experienced by an impressive cross-section of urban society. These characters are not painted superficially: Zadie Smith is ruthless in her satirical dissection of each one of them and compassionate with regards to their strengths and weaknesses -- nobody gets away with just a two-dimensional portrayal.
The book reads easily. The reader is constantly aware of the powers of observation displayed by the author, and throughout the narrative a strong undercurrent of her wit and love of life can be detected. I'll be on the lookout for more of her work.
Winner: Orange Prize for Fiction 2006.
Shortlist: Man Booker 2005.
Shortlist: Commonwealth Writers' Best Book 2006.
This multistage ray has come to an end, but it deserves to continue. I'll ray it forward.

Subok was the one who introduced me to Zadie Smith. He was impressed with her first book, White Teeth, and told me about it during a relaxing post-cycle-breakfast recently. If it wasn't for him, I would not have signed up for this ray.
Since he hasn't read On Beauty yet, I'll make a plan to get this book to him.
