Bought this on the 2nd hand bookshop tour the Helsinki BC-ers organized. :D

From the backflap:
“Zenia is beautiful, smart and greedy, by turns manipulative and vulnerable, needy and ruthless; a man's dream and a woman's nightmare. She is also dead. Just to make absolutely sure Tony, Roz and Charis are there for the funeral. But five years on, as the three women share an indulgent, sisterly lunch, the unthinkable happens; 'with waves of ill will flowing out of her like cosmic radiation', Zenia is back...”

I thought this was a very interesting, well-written book. It was a bit slow at first and it took me a while to get into it, but once I really got to know the characters I couldn't put the book away anymore. Margaret Atwood has put a lot of effort into describing the three main characters and explaining why they are like they are and that made for quite interesting reading. I got a bit annoyed by the 'blame the parents' thing after a while, as it seemed like everything was explained by pointing back at bad things that happened in their childhoods; mostly the absence of a proper father, which I thought was a bit odd. Surely there must be other things to think of to explain someone's current character?! Just blaming the parents seems so easy. The ending was a bit weird as well, I didn't really feel like there was a proper conclusion to the book, and we didn't really find out about what Zenia was all about in the end - we never got to know her. I guess that's not really the point of the book - to get to know Zenia - but it did end up making her look like some flat, one-dimensional, simply evil character. It never really becomes clear how she manages to ensnare the three women so easily - or at least not in a way that I find truly believable.

Either way, with all that, I still enjoyed this book. It's a nice psychological adventure - not much happens in the book until the end, but it's interesting getting to know the three women and I think Atwood does a really good job in that respect. My favourite character was Tony. :D

Thankyou!

This arrived and I had a few books in front of it. When I got to the book I read it fairly quickly, I enjoy Atwood's writing style.
I felt a little unsatisfied at the end, but I definately enjoyed going on the ride with those character - they were all a lot of fun.

I have PMed briz-cowgirl
