Amazon.co.uk Review
Tess Gerritsen’s Vanish sports precisely those qualities that her much-acclaimed Body Double had in profusion: razor-sharp plotting, tight and economical characterisation and (most of all) the inexorable capture of the reader’s attention as her grim plot disturbingly unfolds.
Of course, none of this will come as a surprise to long-term Gerritsen fans (an ever-growing legion)--The Surgeon rang some fascinating changes on the serial killer theme, with a threat from the grave terrifying a doctor, and )--The Apprentice, with its killer utilising medical acumen, took no prisoners. But Body Double was the ace in the hole, with resourceful cop Jane Rizzoli tracking down the murderer of her doppelganger. Jane Rizzoli, readers will be glad to hear, is back in Vanish.

Medical examiner Maura Isles is looking at another body in a slab. Not a new experience for her, but she’s in for another shock when the body opens its eyes and proves to be alive. And violence swiftly follows, as the mystery woman--strikingly beautiful--kills a security guard in the hospital she’s taken to, before capturing a group of hostages. One of them is a pregnant woman--Detective Jane Rizzoli, no less. And if Jane can find out what this lethal abductor wants, she may be able to save her own life--and those of the other hostages. But the clock is ticking.

One might argue that Gerritsen has played safe with this scenario in terms of ratcheting up the tension. After all, a hostage situation is always surefire, with its constant threat of impending violence. But the author (as ever) studiously avoid clichés, and ensures a palm-sweating experience for the reader. A good notion, too, to make Jane Rizzoli more vulnerable in this outing.

Sorry, I meant to journal all these books yesterday - I even brought the BCIDs to work! - but then it all went a bit nuclear and I didn't get round to it.

I picked this up at the meet on Tuesday. I will read it and return it to you at UnCon, Becky :o) Thanks for the loan.

Another BCUKer that I spoke to about this book said that she didn't enjoy this one as much as some of the other Tess Gerritsen books that she's read. I can't say that I agree with her much in this case, even though we often have similar views about books. The story was good, though to start with the two separate threads was quite confusing, which was probably the only bit of the book I didn't really like. Later on, though, the need for the separate threads becomes apparent and it's easier.

Overall, I enjoyed this book, and found Jane's struggles to be very interesting. Bless her! It's not often you get to see Jane Rizzoli looking and feeling that vulnerable, really. I thought it added a bit to the story, especially with Gabriel acting out of character as well, where the case was concerned.

A good read, though at times it felt a little long. 446 pages is rather a lot!

I hope you enjoy this when you read it, Becky :o) See you at UnCon!

Back with me to read.

I have had this for a while, and have been reading the series in order. This is the fifth in the series and it is immediately obvious why Body Double didn’t end with the birth of baby Rizzoli-Dean.
I did find the ‘dead body coming alive’ part interesting but am not sure why it happened – it wouldn’t be necessary to instigate the hospital hostage scenario… and it was too coincidental to throw both Maura and Jane into the scene. Was the ‘dead body’ only to include Maura in the storyline?
I didn’t find this as gripping as some of the others in the series.

I’ve not got a copy ‘The Mephisto Club’ yet so I can now move onto another series.

PS Janwen - in Body Double it is Maura's doppelganger they are hunting for, not Jane's.

I think this is the best Tess Gerritsen book I've read so far. It gripped my attention all the way through even though I felt it rather improbable that a pregnant woman would behave the way the main character here did.

Found on park bench New Walk, Leicester. Quite a good read. Fairly involved plot. I did not get around to reading it for sometime because I had lots of other books to read and have just moved house. I will now release it later today. Not decided where yet. Paul W
