A mystery solved by a broke socialite. Reminds me alot of Janet Evanovich stories, but not funny like hers.

Cha Ching! Nancy Martin has a winner with her Blackbird Sisters mystery. Sex, laughter, a dead body and a few unusual twists - elements of a great mystery. I had not expected to enjoy this book, afterall who really wants a heroine who used to be rich but not has to "slum it" by taking a job. However, I was pleasantly surprised and eagerly await the next book. First book in the series.

From the back of the book:

My parents blew the country for a sunny resort that catered to American tax evaders, leaving the family art collection to my sister Emma and the furniture to my sister Libby. They gave me the land - and a property tax bill for two million dollars. Which is why, I, Nora Blackbird, a former socialite who never really held a job is all my thirty-one years, found myself in dire need of a paycheck.

FROM RICHES TO RAGS

Now Nora has a job as a society page columnist for a Philadelphia paper. This down-and-almost-out former debutante is happy to reclaim her place within the city's elite. Until her first party assignment, when she stumbles upon the murdered body of the host - a millionaire art collector and old family friend. Her sisters - sexy, hard-edged Emma and flaky earth mother Libby, who has her hands full with husband number two and four kids - only complicate matters as Nora investigates. And meanwhile the son of a rumored New Jersy crime boss is pursing her with bone-melting come-ons she can barely resist. Priorities, Nora. Think priorities...

Just finished this and like vraciousdr I wasn't expecting to enjoy it as much as I did. It was a quick read. The Blackbird sisters are quite funny.

Coming from Philadelphia myself, I had to read this to kinda get that back home feeling and I sure did. All th places mentioned are familiar and made the story all the more enjoyable. I will read the next in the series.

Will PM GenieDances to get it moving along.

This was a quick read, funny and very enjoyable. I will look for more books by Nancy Martin. The next in the Blackbird sisters mysteries will, no doubt, be worth taking the time to read!

Journal Entry 12 by kymberlie from Spring, Texas USA on Monday, August 4, 2003
For the most part I found the book a little far-fetched, but I still enjoyed it. I never really got into the characters as much as I would have like to, but I could see how over another book or two I could probably get into them more.

The book’s definitely not as good as one of Janet Evanovich’s or Carolyn Haines’s female mystery series, but it was a pretty fun read. If you’re looking for a breezy beach book that has the potential to work itself into a good series, this is perfect for you.

This book looks like fun! It will be hard not to read this book first when I have a list of other rays/rings in front of it.

DreissM, I wish I could send you some cool Oregon weather but we have been hot this summer. We have spent more days in upper 90's and the lower 100's than we should be, yuck! But I do love sunshine being a San Diego baby. ;)

I am really looking forward to reading this book. It is next after the following bookray/ring books:
Girl Goddess #9: Nine Stories
Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone
Milkrun
The Master and Margarita
How to Murder a Millionaire
Satellite Sisters' Uncommon Senses

I will read as fast as I can! :) Thank you so much!

I will read this after the two rings I currently have, from the mostly good reviews it's gotten, I am looking forward to it. It's looks like a Chick-lit book and mystery got married before leaving the bookstore! LOL

Journal Entry 23 by Booknose from Henryville, Indiana USA on Sunday, November 30, 2003
I read about 25 pages of this before deciding it really wasn't my genre, and moving on to something else. I am just really impatient these days because I have so much I am really antsy to read in my TBR.
Thanks for including me nonetheless.
