Discovering the Long Way Home

This book really surprised me. I bought it for my daughter, who is 12, and she had so much to say after reading this book that I had to read it too.
This short novel is very relevant to our time. It delves into the excessive lives of famous people; the trauma of multiple divorces and relationships; teen sexual experimentation; child abuse; religious doubt.
I really enjoyed the way the author presented the Christians in this story - they were very 3-dimensional and approachable. I find that a lot of media today either show Christians in a derisive light, or as innatanably perfect people.
Overall, I found this book to be really FUN. There's some clever banter, vivid scenes, and very memorable secondary characters. There were also some touching scenes that were subtly written. There are two surprizes toward the end that caught me off guard.
There are a couple of messages readers take away with them after reading this, but they are gently woven into the story rather than pushed at the reader. Even the characters you want to hate have their vulnerable moments. Overall, a great little book that both teens and adults can enjoy.
