Bill Bryson's "Notes from a Big Country" is a collection of columns he wrote for the Mail on Sunday after returning two the US following 20-odd years of living in the UK. It's frequently funny, well-written and always astutely observed. He seems to have mellowed a bit, too, since "the lost continent, which was really rather unkind to Iowa, where he grew up […].

Mr Bryson has now returned to the UK - a comment on the state of his homeland, perhaps? He is an august commissioner of English Heritage, amongst other things. As he follows on from Loyd Grossman is he the token ethnic minority?

I enjoyed dipping into this as Bryson records the eccentricities and frustrations of life in the USA.
