Telling the story of a village cricket team from their formative early days and onto a world tour where they attempt to play a game on every continent. While the book is an interesting travelogue, giving an insight into the modern attitudes towards the old British empire, it does focus heavily on the games of cricket themselves and thus may be difficult for non-cricket followers to enjoy. It is obvious that the author has a great love for the game as he takes it upon himself to carry out all the organising of matches and tours for his team which anyone who has been involved in such undertakings will know can be infuriatingly difficult. Much of the book is devoted to the trails and tribulations of getting a disparate group of people moving in one direction and successfully participating in the games he organises and these anecdotes are generally quite amusing. What did come across in several instances was how brutally honest he was in his descriptions of some of his team members. I often thought how I wouldn't have been best pleased to have seen the author describe me in some of the terms he used and that it would be interesting the next time his encountered these individuals. However the end of the book has a revelation that explains why he pulls no punches in his writings and raises the book from being a rather light and amusing read to something with a much deeper impact. Not brilliantly written but well worth a read anyway, especially for those with an interest in the game of cricket.
