A thoroughly enjoyable read. A well researched, well written "cosy" mystery & a wonderful trip down memory lane for an ex-Montrealer who enjoyed many trips to the "Cantons de l'Est". No blood & gore; no sensationalism; no endless trips to the forensics lab; just a very good old fashioned mystery that keeps you guessing up to the very end. The author sits you right down in the village & lets you absorb & observe the people & the goings on in town. Gamache does an excellent job of delving into everyone's individual personality & past to eliminate the possibles & close in on the perpetrator. Louise Penny, who obviously has some interest in pyschology, includes some interesting conversations between characters which makes one pause in thought, outside the story, before reading on. Highly recommended. I can't wait to read Dead Cold

Three Pines is a quaint country village in Quebec. On Thanksgiving Sunday Jane is found dead with what appears an arrow wound. Is this a hunter's mistake or a homicide? Surely in this village where everyone knows everyone else no one is capable of murder.

Armande Gamache is sent to investigate and slowly all the people have to give up their secrets. This village is a microcosm of society. There are the gay restaurateurs, the old cranky matron, the librarian and other various eccentrics. Is the murderer one of these or the greedy niece

I found the author caught the feeling of the Quebec village very well. This was a very enjoyable read

I enjoyed this story very much. The people of Three Pines are interesting & likeable, as is CI Armand Gamache. I was disappointed that such a nice character was killed before we even knew her, but I would like to read more of these.
