Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell
1 journaler for this copy...

While I enjoyed Clarke's short stories, her novel is styled in a way that reminds me of Charles Dickens. It takes a bit before the story really gets going. (One of the title characters doesn't really show up until you are about 200 pages in, and then the focus is on his father.) I'd say this book is a good one but there are several bits that could be sold as sleep aids. Overall a good book if you are patient.
From the back:
In the year 1806, in the throes of the Napoleonic Wars, most people believe magic to be dead in England-until the reclusive Mr Norrell of Hurtfew Abbey reveals his powers, and becomes a celebrity overnight. Soon, another practicing magician emerges: the young, handsome, and daring Jonathan Strange. He becomes Norrell's student, and the two join forces in the war against France.
