I saw the movie for the first time a couple of weeks ago so I decided I needed to read the book!! I'll probally do a ring with it when I'm done reading it.

I hope that you will write a journal entry letting me know that the book has been found, and that you'll stick around a bit and get to know Bookcrossing. Feel free to read and keep this book, or to pass it on to a friend or even set it out "in the wild" for someone else to find like you did. And if you do choose to join, I hope you'll consider using me, MRWiley, as your referring member.

Just received as a leg on the bookring. Perfect! I am between novels so this came at a perfect time. Thanks, MRWiley for adding me to the ring!
I am torn. I wanted to read this as I'd seen the movie (albeit years ago) and enjoyed it AND I've BEEN to Kenya and was curious to see what Isak Dinesen would say about it. She evoked the countryside - the trees, the plains, the mountains, the animals. The way she wrote about it brought it all back to me (not that I was there for very long, it was several weeks when I was 13 but STILL...I do remember).
What bothered me was how she wrote about the people - the 'natives'. I realize that she is a product of her time AND that Kenya was colonized by the British which gave white people, I think, a sense of superiority. This comes through in her writing, very much 'us' and 'them' and she speaks of some of the natives (maybe all?) as though they are a different species. I did not like this.
So. I LOVED how she wrote about the land and the animals, did NOT like how she wrote about the natives. I'm glad I read it, and now it's time to pass it on...waiting for RockBird's address...
