An ambitiously plotted novel about growing up in 1970s Birmingham, this also has an eye on other times and places. The interludes work well and build beautifully into the main plot, and there are many well-drawn characters here to care about. The only thing I wasn't so keen on was the framing device with Sophie and Patrick; Sophie's introduction felt rather stagey and contrived. But that ended up not mattering at all, and I enjoyed the book so much that I felt distinctly relieved to discover the author's note at the end, which reassured me that a sequel will be forthcoming. I'm so curious about all the things which are hinted at or conspicuously absent...

Caught at tonight''s meetup.

"Thwarted romance and furtive sex" sounds pretty much like the best I can hope for these days ;-)

On the whole, I thought "The Rotters Club" was is a very readable, very enjoyable book – the only sections that didn’t work for me were the introduction and the conclusion – featuring Sophie and Patrick. (In fact, the introduction was so bad I was nearly putting the book down just after I'd picked it up). The book also, apparently, holds the record for the longest sentence in English literature – Coe would’ve been better off just using punctuation, and forgetting about the record books, but it’s not really that big a deal. Good enough for me to keep an eye out for its sequel; I'd like to know what happened to Ben, and how life worked out for Lois.
