A Joshua Croft mystery. At a dinner party for Santa Fe's New Age healers, a magician named Quentin Bouvier is murdered, and Giacomo Bernardi, a Tarot card reader, is arrested. The motive is the theft of a 15th Century handcrafted Tarot card, very valuable both in money and its significance to the New Agers. Joshua is hired to clear Bernardi of the murder charge, and finds that a lot of the mystics have very practical motives for murder.

Satterthwait is a quirky, talented writer - not as well known as some. He has also written some historical mysteries, involving such real-life characters as Lizzie Borden, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Oscar Wilde. The Joshua Croft books are modern, set in Santa Fe, New Mexico. A good read.
