While I was listening to Obama's recent The Audacity of Hope, people started telling me his first book is better, that it is in fact a great read. So I immediately ordered it on CDs.

I liked this book a lot. It is not -- I repeat: not! -- a typical politician's book. In this one (written about 12 years ago, shortly after Obama finished law school), he is as real as someone can be, and you really find out where Barack Obama is coming from! I don't want to tell too much. Maybe I'll just quote Charlayne Hunter-Gault who called it "one of the most powerful books of self-discovery I've ever read." I say there's self-discovery in here for anyone, whether black, white, African, Islamic, etc.

Details:
AUDIO 7.5 hours on 6 CDs
Read by the author
Updated with an prolog and epilog
Grammy Award winner: Best Spoken World Album 2007
Bonus feature at the end: Obama's 2004 Democratic Convention keynote Address

Got it on Sat, thanks!! I am so glad to be the first to receive this audiobook in its like-new condition.

Macaufan just asked me a few days ago to lend him some audiobooks for an out-of-town trip. I was planning to give him something else but as this book just arrived and he is on the ring, I will let him listen to it first.

I like this better than the Audicity of Hope. The bonus track of his speech is especially good.
Thanks for sharing the CDs, I will now pass it back to Azuki.

Journal Entry 5 by Azuki from Miami, Florida USA on Tuesday, April 3, 2007
Back in my hands and will start on it once I finished what I'm listening to.

Journal Entry 6 by Azuki from Miami, Florida USA on Sunday, April 15, 2007
This book is definitely much more accessible and easier to like than Audicity of Hope. His childhood and his family history are entertaining on their own, but Obama has expanded them to a bigger scope, which deepens my understanding of his speech (the bonus track), where he comes from and what his dreams are.
I pm'ed tranq1 on 4/10 and haven't heard from her. Will try again and hopefully can get this CD moving again soon.

4/17: ETA I received Tranq1's address. I have the box packed, hopefully can make a trip to the post office before heading to Charleston. : )

Journal Entry 7 by tranq1 from Tampa, Florida USA on Sunday, April 22, 2007
Received this in the mail yesterday. It was on my wishlist. I will listen to it after the one I am listening to now.

Journal Entry 8 by tranq1 from Tampa, Florida USA on Wednesday, May 9, 2007
I learned a lot about Obama's life that I didn't know. It was very interesting because it was written before he had his political ambitions. This book would be interesting and worth reading even it he wan't running for president.

RELEASE NOTES:

This was better than Audacity of Hope. I liked hearing his life history and the history of his parents. I'm undecided however, if I like him as a presidential candidate. I guess I have a little while to make my decision. He seems like a true to his speach person. I truly believe he has great ideas for the country and whether he makes it as a president or not, he will do good things as a politician. We do need change.

I'm sending this on to mysscyn in Texas. Enjoy! Thanks to gnissorckoob for sharing.

I got this today (it arrived in my box yesterday). I will probably start listening on Monday, after I finish the audio book I''m currently listening to. After watching the democratic debate last night, I''m eager to hear more about & from him. Thanks for the bookring, gnissorckoob!

I just finished listening to this. What a beautiful book! It was so interesting to hear about his background, family and so many of his defining moments. Elements will stick in my memory for a while, I'm sure. I did tear up a few times, though that's not saying much because I cry over everything, LOL.

I was especially moved by the speech he gave at the DNC. I remember sitting in awe as I listened to him give it, and all the feelings of optimism and pride for my country rushed through me all over again while re-listening. I think I need a copy of it to listen to whenever I'm feeling particularly angry with the state of the country :-)

I think I actually liked The Audacity of Hope better... but I'm not really a biography/memoir girl, so that's probably why. Even so, I absolutely loved this. Thanks so much for giving me a chance to hear it- there's just nothing like hearing a memoir read by the author himself. And the little prologue and epilogue were wonderful additions.

I've already PMed msjoanna and will mail it out tomorrow when I make a post office run if I hear back in time. Thanks again!

Journal Entry 19 by msjoanna from Columbia, Missouri USA on Wednesday, September 5, 2007
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It's wonderful to hear an author read his own memoir because the names and voices have such personality to them. Obama did an excellent job reading this book. There were a few moments that I found confusing -- perhaps because of the abridgment. I thought the new introduction really helped to contextualize the book for me and I agree with a previous listener that hearing the DNC speech at the end was also great.

Obama has interesting thoughts on race and class in the United States and his perspective was refreshing. I'm glad to have this bit of biography for him as I evaluate him as a presidential candidate.

I'm looking forward to hearing his political book.

Mailed 9/10/07 to sweetsangria.

Back in Miami, after quite a few miles traveled and 10 listeners. [sweetsangria is listening to it after transferring to MP3.] It was very satisfying to share this terrific book, and you guys took good care of the discs. Will now contribute it to the audiobook library at the local Unitarian congregation, where it can be checked out during office hours.

To be released this week end.
