I greatly enjoy Parker's Spenser mysteries. The dialogue is witty, the characters are down-to-earth, and the plots are believeable.
Hawk is beaten and left for dead; Spenser steps in to rehabilitate him "body and soul". The relationship between the two men is explored (as much as possible, we *are* talking about Spenser and Hawk) to a satisfying degree.
Hawk's love Cecile comes to realize just how hard it is to love him and needs to decide what she'll do about it
