I bought this book at the Friends of the Library used bookstore in Rockville, Maryland.
Am I crazy or what? I buy books I've already read and loved just to mail them to others to read. Enjoy this trade paperback book of short stories, everyone! I sure did.

Hi! The book arrived in the mail yesterday and I began to read it today. Thanks for starting the bookray SqueakyChu. I am enjoying it so far and will post again when I have finished it.
It's been a long time since I read a book of short stories. I really enjoyed reading them.
"A Temporary Matter" was my favorite of the stories I think. The atmosphere created by the author was melancholy but in a strangely sweet way. I also enjoyed "Mrs.Sen's" and "The Third and Final Continent". Each story presents snippets of pivotal moments or events in otherwise ordinary lives.

Received; thank you! I have a few reading "obligations" on my plate right now (it all seems to happen at once sometimes, doesn't it?) but will try to get to this one as soon as possible. I've developed a real fondness for writers of Indian background and am looking forward to the read.
I really enjoyed this collection. Lahiri has an engaging style and her descriptions of the small sorrows and joys in her characters' lives are touching and endearing. Favourites? Probably "Sexy" and "At Mrs. Sen's" although certainly Mrs. Croft from "The Third And Final Continent" has to be the most memorable character! I was reminded a bit of Dorothy Parker's stories while reading this; she too writes about small events that are tragic in their own ways. I'll definitely want to read The Namesake after this and anything else Lahiri comes out with. Thanks for the intro to a new author!

The book arrived safely today in a blue wrapper. Thanks for moving it on. I have already started to read it.
Wonderfully well written set of stories. Lahiri's sad and wistful stories of separation and cultural alienation span three continents and several generations. They are so subtle and convincing that it is amazing that this is her first book. I also really enjoyed The Namesake and recommend it to those who liked this one.

I am less enthusiastic about this collection than the BCers reading it before me.
Most of the stories were ok, I guess, solid writing and all that. To me they were mostly slow. I have "The Namesake" on TBR and maybe I will enjoy a novel by Lahiri more.

i was somewhat disappointed. after enjoying The namesake very much, this was a bit of a let-down. i found the characters underdeveloped and the stories sort of died before they took off. the only one i really enjoyed was the very last one. Maybe because like the hero, i started reading the book on one continent and ended it on another.

Loved this book I seem to be reading quite a few books recently with short stories and have thoroughly enjoyed them. Jhumpa Lahiri has a beautiful way of writing and would reccomend reading this one. Will be emailing mikopikotrain for address and will forward it on

I'm not usually a short stories person, but I really enjoyed this collection! I think the author has a lot of skill in developing multi-dimensional characters without needing to reply on longer format. Lately I have found myself drawn to stories about people living within a culture as an outsider- this book presents a variety of this type of experience beautifully.

I do not usually go out of my way to read books of short stories, unless they are recommended to me for some reason. I wanted to read this one because it is a Pulitzer prize winner. It did not disappoint.
I loved most of the stories in this book, and even the ones which I didn't love, I still must say I enjoyed. They were perfect in short story format, although now I do want to read other books by Lahiri, just to read more of her style. This is a lovely book to read.

I liked this collection of short stories better than her other book. Some happy, some sad, some just thought-provoking. There's no one story that stands out from the others - although, like the namesake, it made me aware of cultural differences.
What would it be like to be cooped up in a foreign country, with none of the family/village gathering and rituals you were so used to, totally dependent on your husband because you were never raised to be anything else? I can't possibly imagine.

I tend to read and much prefer novels to short stories but this was an excellent collection of stories, each briefly drawing the reader deeply into the characters' lives and culture. The author poignantly captured the experience of immigrants and first-generation Americans. My favourite was Mrs. Sen's but I enjoyed all of them.

These short stories are superb. The author reveals masterfully the emotions of Indian immigrants in the US. Quite clearly there's an abyss between the Indian and the "Western" cultures and ways of life. In the process of adaptation to their new home country the immigrants end up neither completely American, nor completely Indian. And that's in case they succeed to adapt. I think that's why most of the stories are sad, but brilliant.

I thought that was lovely! I liked the culture clash, or maybe mix, of Indian meeting Western culture. Even in something like A Temporary Matter, where the protagonists' culture shouldn't really make much of a difference, this mix had some effect, if nothing else on the mood of the story.
It's hard to pick which was my favourite. I'm tempted to say A Temporary Matter (I love the dual meaning of the title), but maybe that's just because it was the first? The Third and Final Continent was really nice too, very sweet. Oh let's be honest, they were all pretty good stories. I've never read anything by Jhumpa Lahiri, but I'd love to get my hands on more of her books!

These short stories tell about family members or other people close to each other. They have problems like misunderstanding, often due to cultural differences between the Western life and Indian habits. For the reader, there is suspense enough to expect some unexpected, but Lahiri beautifully guides her persons to mutual understanding – interpreting indeed. The stories were touching and yet brought good mood. Thanks for sharing the lovely book.-ruzena

For a first book, this was a nice little set of stories. I recently read Olive Kitteridge, another set of Pulizer short stories and I didn't think the books were in the same league. I would try more by this author though, without a doubt. Thank you for sharing, I hope this book has a long and uneventful journey in life!

I loved this set of short stories. They had such colourful characters, humouress with a touch of sadness in each. If I had to pin point favourites, they would have to be A Real Durwan and The Treatment of Bibi Haldar.

These short stories offer snippets of the lives of seemingly ordinary people going through the motions of everyday life. Even when there is this transcultural emphasis, many of the highs and lows, joys and disappointments experienced by the characters can be recognised by the reader,whichever nationality or culture they may be. 'Sexy' really made an impact on me... although I find the sense of 'up in the air' endings lead me to forget easily the other stories.

When I signed up for this ray, SqueakyChu assured me that I'd enjoy the stories and I certainly did.
I especially liked those stories written from a kid's point of view, "When Mr. Pirzada Came to Dine" and "Mrs. Sen's".
My favourite has to be "The Third and Final Continent", though. I think it was well chosen as the final story in this collection because it left me happy and smiling.
Lahiri's writing is great and I've just added The Namesake and Unaccustomed Earth to my wishlist.

This was a very pleasant read. I do like the occasional short stories book every now and then, and all the stories in this one had a feel very different from everything I have ever read; I guess it has a little to do with the Indian culture that is imprinted throughout the whole book.
My favourite story was by far The Third and Final Continent, Mrs. Croft was a remarkable and memorable character.
I contacted Nakipa and the book's already on its way to her, it must be arriving very soon :) Thank you very much for sharing, and sorry I kept the book for so long.

I realized after receiving the book yesterday, that I had already read it!
I guess I must have signed up for this book in a different ray as well. :$

"I finished this book last night. I really enjoyed these short stories. They kept me interested enough that once I started a story I didn't put the book down until I had finished it (even when it kept me up past midnight). My favourite was also the last one, like ravencat, VictoriaWagtail and vassilka. I really liked how the main character takes the time to sit with the 100 year old women whose house he is staying in. He even drives by her house when he is older and reminisces about his time with her and how she helped him to connect with his wife. Maybe, it's a cultural thing but it just seems that respect and appreciation for older people has been lost in the "western world"."
I will contact the next person on the list and pass it on.

Since I would have had this book for a month, I thought it would be okay to send it by surface mail. Hopefully it doesn't take longer than that to arrive.

Picked up today along with another BC book from my Gran's place so will get round to reading in the next few weeks..I can't wait! It'll be in England over HM Queen Elizabeth's Diamond Jubilee celebrations at the beginning of June so will be a part of the social history of the world as well :)
A wonderful and delightful collection of short stories that are all filled with a humility and emotion rarely seen combined. Set against the backdrop of the culture and society of Indian citizens, it provides the reader with a soft but gritty education into this particular way of life and highlights relevant challenges and certain matters beautifully well.
Some of the stories are written better than others and you'll definitely have a favourite, but together they work incredibly well. You'll finish IoM with a fondness and will be one of those books that although you cannot put a finger on exactly why it was good, know it was and relate it to others more often that not.

Interpreter of Maladies has arrived safely to the West Coast of the USA!! Wow, this novel has had quite a journey. I look forward to reading it and sending along on its journey.

I just finished reading this collection of nine short stories tonight. Although, I think Jhumpa Lahiri is a good writer, I thought most of her stories were too sad/depressing for my taste. I don't plan to read anything else by Jhumpa Lahiri.

I love short stories and these nine stories are real gems. A look into short periods of the characters lives told in a way you can feel their emotions and pain. very sensitive writing.I can't pick a favorite because each story was special in its own way. I really enjoyed this book, which made me travel from India to the USA and back, depending on the stories. That was my first Jhumpa Lahiri and certainly not my last.

I loved this book! Especially the last story left me feeling content and excited to be alive, it was a bit like a shot version of the Namesake.
