Picked up at the bookcrossers meet at the Nag's Head, Walthamstow on 27/2.
For some reason I expected this to be aimed at teens but it was a grown-up book.
An elderly man returns to his childhood home to assess the events he experienced as a child during the Second World War. The book tells how a child's view of the world, his imagination and sense of adventure brought about events in the adult world which he didn't understand at the time but have hung heavily over him for the rest of his life.
I quite enjoyed the book, seen from a child's eyes but offering a story that I, as an adult, could see in a different way from him. However, I did find it rather slow going at times.

I really liked this book. It was such a surprise cause I picked it up from the shelf without even paying attention what it is and started to read. Narrative was really good, the voice of the young Stephen was very believable and the story itself will keep you glued with the book. It will force you toward the last page even though you probably know what is waiting you there. Just like Stephen knew long time before he realized he knew. I really like Frayn mixed voices of young and old Stephen because I usually don’t like stories in which the kid is a narrator because I’m irritated with the kid’s inability to be profound enough or his over eloquence that makes character unconvincing. However, here the kid plays his, kid’s role perfectly and the old man gave a lovely and satisfying analysis.
So I guess I enjoyed more in the narrative, in descriptions of friendship between Stephen and Keith, their small battles and battles of their families, of inner monologues, flow of thoughts, small details of everyday life than in the mystery all that supposed to resolve.
