As unbelievable as that seems to you, what if you discover that he has betrayed you in the most awful, most personal way and that your humiliation has become worldwide news.

In lesser hands, this could have disintegrated into a pathetic modern day bodice ripper, but Shreve gives her tale heft and pulls the reader along as Kathryn Lyons sets out to discover who her husband really was and forces the reader to ponder the question of whether we can ever truly know another person, even the one to whom we believe we are closest.
