Buying a Fishing Rod for My Grandfather
2 journalers for this copy...

I bought this to get a letter 'X' for my 2007 A-Z Author challenge.
Amazon Review:
Gao Xinjian’s book is a wistful collection of writing. It is not so much a collection of short stories as a series of long prose poems. Each essay has no narrative structure, with beginning, middle and end. Instead the author describes scenes from ordinary lives, mundane but perhaps important moments for the characters involved.

A strange tome, and having reread the Synopsis I find it quite appropriate. At times I was left with the feeling that I'd missed something or dropped off to snooze for a few minutes only for the author to bring it all back by the end.
As I have said this was bought to be able to fulfil my 'X' in my 2007 Author A-Z Challenge, which I've done. This is now earmarked to go to bookcrosser who has a very different challenge.

Beautiful prose, but some of the stories left me flat wondering what the author was trying to say. The fishing rod story was my favourite, trying to recapture the beauty of youth and lost in the world of tomorrow.
