Sookie Stackhouse is a cocktail waitress in small town Louisiana. She's fairly happy, except for the tiny matter of not having a love life.
Sookie can read minds, which can be a bit of a disability in the dating game. Either people know her secret and are afraid to get too close, or else she can hear what the guys are really thinking.
But then she meets Bill, a surprising new point of silence in her mind. She can't hear anything he thinks, because he is a vampire.

This is an entertaining enough read, but the writing style is a bit heavy going. Would be interested to read some newer ones in the series to see if her style changes at all.
