This is a book in a series, but can be read alone. The important thing to remember is that Hiccup is the hero (however unlikely that may seem, as he's often bullied by bigger, fiercer Viking boys), Toothless is a wonderful dragon (even though rather small and inclined to think sleeping and eating are the most important things in the world - other than himself of course), and Gobber has the job of training the Viking boys to be proper Vikings - which unfortunately means muscles and yelling, rather than intelligence and compassion. At least to him. Although sometimes it takes intelligence rather than an aggressive reaction to save the day....
