A kindly but aimless hero fishes a failed nun out of the sea off the coast of Portugal, and at last finds a worthwhile reason for living; and also maybe a pointless reason for dying.

The ex-nun's inheritance carries possible ruin for her true father and a chance for British Intelligence to restore a long-lost canary to its birdcage, a chance seized without pity.
