Old library stock. Bought it for a ring as I really enjoyed this one in the past.

Not sure how to describe it without putting you off - but it's ok - some useful quotes on the back! I'll just choose one.

"As a profoundly serious examination of remorse and its effects...this book is as moving as it is insightful. As a murder mystery it is one of the best I have ever read. But as a novel it takes my breath away, it is so accomplished." - Ruth Rendell

I really do recommend this one.

This book gripped me from beginning to end. It is clever and moving and shocking and fascinating and I don't usually rave about American writers like this! What an intriguing tangle of relationships. The background of the Greek tuition was also approriate for me because I've just started an OU classics course. I do hope this author has written others because I will be looking out for them.

Thank you very much for sharing this and I will be sending it onto necroscope in the next few days.

Finally finished....now what to say. An interesting book that seemed to come at me in waves, one minute it seemed slow and sluggish, as your eyes glazed over the text, and the next you were whizzing along caught up in storyline. This went on for most of the book. I picked it up initially and after half an hours reading dropped it, and read another book instead. A few days later I came back and attacked it with vigour. The novel followed me everywhere. Whenever i had to wait for a bus, or a doctor or for a lift to work I'd slog through another few pages. Now don't get me wrong, its a fabulous book, I just felt it meandered too much, when it could have been written tighter. I found the ending a litle disappointing, as it does not really end, just fizzles out to a whisper.
Liked it - Yes
Enjoyed it - No

Arrived safely.

Sorry for the delay in journaling but I've been distracted from BC'ing lately with a new job.

Well, finally managed to get this off the TBR pile !

The writing style is very accomplished and I enjoyed that aspect of the book. The storyline is intriguing but sometimes ponderous. The diversion into horror (thought I might have enjoyed that twist) was disappointingly curtailed early, and could have been elaborated upon further.

However, I did enjoy the book and found it hard to put down through the more racy passages.
