Wow. At first it was a real struggle to get any sort of traction in this book. It took a couple of false-starts, but after about 75 pages this book really comes alive. It is lush and dense and full of detail. I remain fascinated by many of the historical details; It's been a week since I finished it and I'm still thinking about things that happened therein. I haven't seen the movie, but I can't imagine how it could even begin to do justice to its depth of prose.

I recommend it highly. Stick with it.
