Received on 1/27/07 as part of a bookray.

Finished reading it today, 2/1/07. The book is interesting, but I didn't like it. I couldn't warm up to any of the characters, except maybe Tom Cross. Yep, he was my favorite character.

I've now read all three of Guterson's books, and I feel that Snow Falling on Cedars towers over the other two. I LOVED Snow Falling on Cedars. The second was enjoyable, and this third was readable. Guterson's second novel, East of the Mountains, I read a few weeks ago. It was a nice story, not as gripping as Snow Falling on Cedars, nor as well written and the plotting was rather trite.

Our Lady of the Forest is much better written than East of the Mountains, but the story didn't interest me. I couldn't stand the character of Carolyn. I didn't care much about Father Collins. I didn't like Ann, the visionary, either, she seemd obviously sick and irrational and no one out of the thousands of people around her would take her to the hospital. The ruminations on faith and Christianity and the existence of God or of the devil were not engaging to me. There were too many off hand references to other pieces of literature, for any one of the references to grab me.

But the description of the forest was wonderful. Guterson always does a wonderful job of transporting me to the northwest. And every book of his introduces me to a new facit of the agricultural life of Washington: strawberries and apples before; mushrooms and logging in this book. And I very much enjoyed the characterization of Tom Cross. He was the most interesting part of the novel for me.
