Another cancelled library book.
Bill Bryson is an author I hear a lot mentioned about on BookCrossing and after reading 'Notes From A Small Island' I am a fan. So figured I had to pick this book up that he wrote about American English.

I've read a handful of Bill Bryson's books now and really enjoy his writing. His writing, while giving a lot of information and describing experiences also has a lot of humour in it.
Made in America is different from previous Bryson books I have read in that it is not told from personal experience (though some parts he does insert his opinion and humour in). He takes a very long look at the American English language - revealing where words came from, how sayings originated and also throws a lot of interesting history and background into the mix.
I could describe reading this book as being like lessons with a favourite teacher... you're still learning things that if you were taught by someone else would be boring.
This book was first published in 1993 so some words that are so important now to do with the internet among other things are understandably missing.
