From the back cover: "Jazz was her ticket out. Just as Charlotte is set to leave the small town of Norman, Manitoba, her mother dies, and she is forced to give up a music career to care for her ailing father. Now facing retirement herself, she must come to grips with a lifetime of choices and missed opportunities."
I liked Charlotte as she was almost always her true self, not like her mother who was always trying to impress someone. This story moves back and forth between the past and present. It's about the choices people make. It's also about the tragedies that strike families and how they deal with them. The struggle to be free to be oneself is also a theme. Small town life and everything it entails is well depicted. Having lived in Winnipeg, the big city nearby, it was great to hear familiar landmarks mentioned. This is a reflective book, that is well written.
