From the cover -
C-SPAN, which celebrates its twenty-fifth anniversary in the spring of 2004, has become a mainstay for political junkies. And Booknotes, the flagship of its book programming for fifteen years, has become a place to see serious, thoughtful nonfiction get its television due.
The wide-ranging interviews of the Booknotes series have already been the basis for three best-selling books. Now, C-SPAN CEO and Booknotes host Brian Lamb presents a new collection of nearly eighty interviews with contemporary nonfiction writers that offer insights into our national character.
Booknotes: On American Character explores the political tensions that have shaped our nation. America has a long history of highly partisan politics, often bitter, whether between Samuel Tilden and Rutherford B. Hayes in the election of 1876 or George W. Bush and Al Gore in 2000. Yet Booknotes: On American Character isn't just about our periods of national divisiveness. It offers the thoughts of seventy-eight biographers, historians, and journalists whose topics span 225 years of the American experience. You'll read essays on American exceptionalism and the leaders who promoted it, stories of Americans' penchant for ingenuity and tales of the benefits and downsides of capitalism. Several authors remind us of America's willingness to take up arms to promote democracy, while other writers capture our ongoing struggles with violence and racial prejudice. And a few stories, such as Michael Paterniti's travels with Einstein's brain, are included because they are only-in-America kinds of tales.
On American Character is a valuable addition to the Booknotes legacy for fans of the program and for anyone interested in the great historical moments, issues, and people that have shaped America.

Sadly, MaryZee passed suddenly in September 2012. MaryZee's daughter is now ready to rehome her mom's books and I was willing to collect and redistribute them to keep her literary legacy alive.

MaryZee had a lot of books on her BC shelves when she passed. I am planning on sharing most of them with other locals. But I am hanging on to a few that might be more appropriate for other distribution methods. From the looks of it, this might be a good fit if I revive the Bookish Book Box.

I'm claiming this hefty hardcover from the Bookish Book Box in Memory of MaryZee. I'm pleased to be able to keep some of her books moving!

Later: This one's a widely-varied collection of transcribed interviews from C-SPAN's "Booknotes" series, featuring views on history, current affairs, technology, and more, from all up and down the political spectrum. There are tidbits about McKinley's assassination, the Triangle shirtwaist factory fire, the inventor of television, the sinking of the "Lusitania", the creation of the presidential monument at Mount Rushmore, and much, much more, with commentary on how these events reflected their times. I spotted many favorite authors among the contributors here, including Simon Winchester and Daniel Stashower.
