In the summer of her twenty-eighth year, Edna Pontellier and her children spend the summer in Grand Isle, an idyllic coastal community on the Gulf of Mexico. Away from her husband and the sweltering heat of 1890s' New Orleans, Edna releases herself to her deepest yearnings, plunging into an illicit liaison that reawakens her long dormant desires, enflames her heart, and, eventually, blinds her to all else.

Written nearly one hundred years ago, THE AWAKENING is the compelling story of an extraordinarily modern woman struggling against the constraints of marriage and motherhood, and slowly discovering the power of her own sexuality. Edna's search for her own individuality touches the hearts of women who've learned the value of freedom and happiness, and her story is now regarded as a classic in American fiction.

I am sad to report that I haven't actually read this book. Picked it up for cheap in a bargain book bin and thought it would be interesting, but the book box I bought it for arrived before I had a chance to get into it, so it is being bundled away and sent off with the box to keep all on time. I hope whoever chooses this one enjoys it!

I chose this book from the women's fiction book box. I'll keep it moving once I've read it.

I was first introduced to Kate Chopin's writings through my Freshman Lit class in college. I loved her short stories, so I know I'll love this too. I will keep it moving once I've read it.

Finished this today.

I enjoyed the book, but I did find myself zoning out occasionally while reading it. It was written so long ago that is uses some "antique" language that is sometimes hard to get into, but for the most part it's not difficult to read.

My first impression of Edna was that she was a trollop, but by the end of the book I just felt sorry for her. She was obviously suffering from depression although in that time period, they wouldn't have known much to do about it.

This is going to be sent off in my Double Crossing bookbox in mid-March.

Thanks for sharing!
