Anfangs urkomisch, vor allem so kurz vor Silvester, aber stellenweise schn sehr gezogen..

Due to BCID difficulties, I've taken all too long to journal this book, which I read well half a year ago. So unfortunately my statement here won't be too detailled, but let me say I really quite enjoyed this read. As isn't unusual for Hornby, this too manages to be laugh-out-loud funny and at the same time unsparingly bitter about the darker sides of human existence.
I agree with howc that there were some lengths, especially towards the end, but that didn't stop me from toroughly enjoying this. I really quite liked the end -- I had been constantly wondering for the last half of the book how he would pull off an ending that wasn't going to be too tacky or utterly unrealistic, and I think he did as well as was possible with the unlikely premise.
And a great quote:
Why does reading freak people out so much? Sure, I could be pretty anti-social when we were on the road, but if I was on playing a Gameboy hour after hour, no one would be on my case. In my social circle, blowing up fucking space monsters is socially acceptable in a way that "American Pastoral" isn't.

Some years ago I had this audiobook - unfortunately its second CD was absolutely unreadable. Since then I am curious about the end of the story... Good occasion!
Well, the first half of the book would have been quite sufficient. In the beginning the subject and Horby's style of writing are interesting and funny, but after a while the story doesn't offer any more suprises and the characters seem to repeat their actions and their behaviour over and over again.
In the end I found it much more bitter than funny.
