I picked up this one at Good will. Another great dysfunctional, and yet functioning family by Anne Tyler. That's why I love this author so much!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
From the book jacket...
In her rich new novel, Anne Tyler gives us the story of a young man haunted by guilt over his brother's fate - and of his struggle to atone for the wrong he feels he has done.
In 1965 the Bedloe family lives on a quiet street in Baltimore. It is an 'ideal, apple-pie househond,' and 17 yr old Ian has all the usual expectations and dreams for the future. That is, until the night when he meddles in his older brother's life - and from that careless moment on, nothing can ever be the same.
Seeking to make amends, Ian is drawn to the Church of the Second Chance, where he is taught that forgiveness is not automatic but earned. Raising the 3 children that are thrust on him, he finds himself - amazed - drowning in family and duty. Until out of the very heart of the domestic clutter, a light begins to flash...
Anne Tyler makes us smile and ache at the same time as she weaves her inimitable spell, immersing us in the bewilderments of family life and the surprising complexities of personal salvation.
Book arrived safely today. Thanks so much, my friend!!! You're always welcome to anything that catches your eye on my TBR or AVL shelves.
December 2009
I read this in advance of watching the Hallmark Christmas movie based on the book...since the book is ALWAYS better than the film, I wanted to read it first. Very sad in parts and heartwarming in others, I found the book to be highly engaging. Ian is a character I instantly sympathized with, and I found myself cheering for him thoughout, hoping he would break through the guilt he felt and the life he sacrificed for his nieces/nephew, and eventually find peace and a happy life of his own.
