Really not sure about this one ... :-)

This edition was published as a free giveaway kind of thing, it came with the Sunday Telegraph in the UK sometime in November 2006. Judging by the cover (shame on me!!) and the blurb, it's the kind of book that normally it wouldn't even occur to me to read. But since it was free, I thought Why not ... if I absolutely don't want to read it I can always pass it on to someone or release it. Also:

The place I found this was on a windowsill in a train station in Surrey, the exact place where I also released a book ('The Light Fantastic' by Terry Pratchett). So it felt kind of like karma that I was leaving a book there and also taking one away. :-) There were several copies of the book but I only took one. One shouldn't be greedy. :-)

I don't really know whether I'm going to read this book or not - normally not my cup of tea - but I'll try, anyway. :-) Update will follow ...

The book is read, July 12th through 23rd. Not very thoroughly read, but read. :-) I was pleasantly surprised by this book. Why? Watch this space ... !! :-)

OK, time to try to journal this book properly before I forget all about it. :-)

As I said, I was pleasantly surprised by this book. It was much better than I expected it to be. I don't normally read chick lit as I usually find it to be, well, insipid and devoid of interest. But this book was - judging by my experience with the genre, which admittedly is limited - a cut above.

The story's pretty simple ... the narrator, Sunny Weston, used to be fat, but now she's lost weight. Mysteriously, though, her life didn't become instantly perfect the moment she got skinny. Hm. She has this idea in her head that if she can wear size ten clothes, then she'll be perfect, and her life will be too. Hence the title.

Sunny's life is lacking something but it's hard to say what it is. She's been desperately in love with a coworker for years, but he never gave her the time of day when she was fat. Now she's thin he's suddenly discovered what a great girl she is. But somehow the relationship isn't everything she dreamed it would be ...

One day after her workout Sunny almost accidentally saves a little boy from being kidnapped by a stranger. She's helped by another stranger - the surly, ahem, 'investigator' Cagney James. (His job is basically to trick married women into cheating so that their husbands will have some dirt on them. He hates women so he loves his job.) Cagney has a checkered past and some bad experiences behind him. When he and Sunny meet it's loathe at first sight - neither of them has ever met anyone quite so hopelessly annoying as the other. But of course, opposites attract ... and are they really such opposites, anyway ... ?

This book was a fun read - it's well written, the characters are believable and appealing and even though the plot was kind of obvious (I mean, OK, which two characters would *you* guess end up together?) it was skilfully enough done that it kept me entertained pretty much from start to finish. Overall a pleasant surprise. :-) I think I may turn this book into a ring ... though maybe Findabair would like to read it first, she likes chick lit. :-) I'll take it with me to the meetup on Sunday and see.
