Purchased in Taiwan nearly 10 years ago, I still haven't got around it (reading Song of Solomon wasn't easy).

Journal Entry 2 by e-marmotte from Montauban, Midi-Pyrénées France on Saturday, December 23, 2006
The book will be better off with someone (Kanapoutz) who wants to read it.

Journal Entry 3 by KanaPoutz from Cannes, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur France on Wednesday, December 27, 2006
I've heard so much about this book, especially here on the BC forums that I'm really looking forward to reading it! Thanks e-marmotte!

Journal Entry 4 by KanaPoutz from Cannes, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur France on Monday, May 21, 2007
Well... that was tough! Tough to read, it took me about a month to get through. It is beautifully written but not easy.
Tough story too... quite awful and terrifying, but at the same time inspiring.
I feel I should read it again to understand it fully, but I'm not ready to do this right away! It seems that there is a movie from the book, maybe I should see that.
Thanks e-marmotte for this challenging book!

I was sorting out some books onto a new bookshelf yesterday when I noticed that myself and KT-J both have a copy (click here to view Journal Entries) of this book. I'll therefore be making this copy available as an International bookray.

- The person before you will PM you for your address, please PM them back with your address
- Please make a journal entry once you've received the book
- Please put the book at the top of your TBR pile but under other rings/rays that arrived first
- Read the book (take your time and enjoy the book, try to finish it within one month)
- When you are close to the end, refer to the journal and PM the next person to get their address
- Once you finish the book, make another journal entry and let us know what you thought
- Please send the book to the next person on the list!
- If you are the last person please do whatever you like - release it into the wild, start another ring/ray or keep it if you want to!... Happy Reading!!

Well, I agree with the other journalers' that this was quite a tough book. Fortunately I got it read over the weekend, so was able to stick with it. There were bits which I did just not 'get', moreso the language than the general storyline. I did enjoy, however, the way in which Toni Morrison manages to weave the story of the past into the present events. Not bad overall, but a little confusing!
Thanks to stubee for the opportunity to read this book :-)

All packed up and ready to post to Supertalya in the morning!

(EDIT)Now posted!

I got a package from Korea. Thanks!

Try as I might to appreciate Morrison's writing, I often find it almost unbearable. The language is poetic, the sentences elusive. That's the magic of it, really. It's beautiful, but very demanding at the same time. Like prose poetry. I loved the warmth the book radiated. Beloved is a beautiful name, so a book like this could by no means be ugly or bad. It's just difficult and time-consuming, if you want to linger on in one sentence. I tried to be quick, but my Christmas holiday caused a bit of a delay, for which I'm sorry.

I found StrangeEmily's address on RABCK and I'll send this to her first thing tomorrow. Thanks for sharing!

Hey, that's a ***surprise***!!!

I joined in a bookring for this book 2 years ago but i thought the book was lost on its way so I added the title in my wishlist. Last monh a friend saw the book in my wishlist and bought it for me in its Greek translation, but I still haven't read it. And I always like to read from the original; but it is so convenient to have a translation nearby!

Thank you so much stubee and LaPitchoune, also for the nice S.E. stickers!

P.S. This is my first day out of the house in 4weeks (Igave birth to my daughter in 23/12) and the weather was so nice I took a walk to the post office. This package topped my good mood)

Journal Entry 17 by StrangeEmily from Trikala, Trikala Greece on Friday, February 6, 2009
Tough, but poetic and powerfull. Very convincing in describing how it feels to be a slave and what it means to be free. The meaning of freedom and deciding for oneself affects every reader.
I was also impressed by the character of "Beloved".

On Monday it will be posted to the The-Quilt-Lady in USA!

Journal Entry 18 by The-Quilt-Lady from Anaheim, California USA on Thursday, February 26, 2009
Rec'd a surprise in todays mail from StrangeEmily in Greece! What fun! I knew it was coming but was still surprised to see it there. :) Took almost 3 weeks to arrive after your post Emily. Not bad... this little book traveled a long way! Fun to see the different stamps used,... and thanks much for the cute bookcrossing bookmark!
I have a lot going on this week and next, but hope to find time to start this soon.
I shall report back!..................

3/12...hmmm... what did I think about this book? 1/3 of the time I found it interesting, and the other 2/3 I felt really confused and not sure what was even going on!
I can't say that I liked nor disliked the book. I just kept reading because I was committed to trying to like it.....but when it was over I felt relieved and happy to move on to something else.
It didn't enrich my life, or make me feel glad that I'd read it. Did I care about the characters? Not really. Will I read another by this author? Most likely not. Redeeming qualities? Not sure... I guess I can now say I've read something by Toni Morrison!
I always think it's interesting to hear what others think of books--- some really liked this one! It says on the cover it's "a masterpiece...magnificent..astounding...overpowering!" uh...I don't see it, but... okay???!

Anyway, it's finished and on it's way to Twiggy in SC. Hope you enjoy it more than I did! :)
