To Meredith Mitchell, marooned in a London flat, the Cotswolds seem like a haven of peace. Her friend Chief Inspector Markby has a different view as he witnesses the bulldozing of one of his boyhood haunts for a housing estate. When a body is found in the foundations his outlook turns even grimmer. The only cheering prospect is Meredith's visit.
