Ако сте помислили "Ево још једног ДаВинчијевог кода!" – преварили сте се! Овај роман ни у ком случају није клон Брауновог романа и зато немојте дозволити да вас то одбије.
Радња се дешава у Милану у 15-ом веку а прича је отац Агустин Лејре "тајни агент" одељења за дешифровање Римске Инквизиције. Неколико писама анонимног "Злослутника" шаље оца Агустина у Милано да разреши загонетку из једног од њих и то у манастир у коме Леонардо ДаВинчи ствара своје ремек дело "Тајна Вечера". Да ли је велики Леонардо јеретик? Зашто је променио традиционални приказ тајне вечере? Коју поруку крије његово дело и коме је она упућена? Треба ли инквизиција да га оптужи за јерес? ... само су нека од питања која се намећу сама од себе. Док отац Агустин покушава да допре до сржи проблема, дешава се низ мистериозних умирања која су изгледа некако повезана...
Иза романа стоји свакако огроман истраживачки рад; већина ликова су историјске личности (на крају књиге наћи ћете додатак о њима).

Set in 1497 Milan, at the time of the painting of the Cenacolo, or The Last Supper, in the refectory of Santa Maria delle Grazie, Sierra has created a tale of religious fanaticism, betrayal, murder, Church politics, artistic chicanery and mystery to confound the reader. Fra Agostino Leyre, a Papal Inquisitor, is sent to Milan to confirm--or not--the messages of the "Soothsayer," who alleges that Leonardo Da Vinci is a heretic and has hidden heretical messages in his painting of The Last Supper.
What Father Agostino follows is a labyrinthine path through alliances and rivalries, differences of opinion about Leonardo and a discussion of the heresy of the Cathars. They are a fascinating sect, more extra-Christianity than Christian heretics. Their practices are based on a belief that certain deprivations--primarily food and sex--will purify and make them worthy.
Sierra is a very fine guide, taking the reader through palaces and monasteries rife with intrigue and typical of the flowering of intellect that came after the Dark Ages. It is a time when "Suddenly, from one day to the next, Plato's Greece, Cleopatra's Egypt and even the extravagant curiosities of the Chinese Empire that Marco Polo discovered seemed to deserve greater praise than our own Scriptural stories." Dangerous for the incumbency. A compelling case is made that Leonardo's heretical beliefs are there for all to see in The Last Supper, if only we know how to find them. Sierra gives us the key--and keeps the suspense going right up to the end of the book. It isn't necessary to believe any of it, or even care if it's true, to enjoy this pilgrimage through another time and place.
Oh this is actually very interesting historical novel about Leonardo da Vinci (yeah another one), his masterpiece Last Supper and its secrets and mystery. Very interesting indeed; book which will leave you with bunch of questions about what we know and do we actually see what we’re looking at?

This book is about Da Vinci and his painting of The Last Supper. I found the prose rich and full of wonderful descriptions especially when you consider this is a translation. The story is a mystery based on an Inquisitor who is sent to confirm allegations that Da Vinci has put in hidden heretical messages in his painting. As befits the times there are alliances and lots of intrique. The historical aspects of the story are fascinating as is the discussion of the Cathars, a Christian sect. I found the book very interesting and wonder if only half this is true why the painting was allowed to exist
Started reading this book today!
I started this book with fairly high hopes. It sounded quite interesting, being about Da Vinci's Last Supper. However it was so sluggish that after 40 pages I had to give up. I also found that the author used unnecessarily large words. If you can explain something gracefully and accurately in 2 syllables, why take 10?

I liked this historical thriller about Da Vinci, The Last Supper, religious and political intrigue in the 15th century. Sometimes there are mysteries and sometimes there are nothing to find, except rumors.

I picked this up at today's BC-in-DC meeting in Westminster, Maryland, to release.
Mea culpa, mea culpa! I have been seriously remiss in attending to my duties as a bookcrosser. My wife has been on a roll, trying to clear some of the unnecessary clutter out of the house, and she found a stack of books that I had forgotten about. I don't know if I had planned to read this or not, but I certainly didn't intend for it to sit on a shelf here for this long. It is time for it to move along.
This will be available at the BC-in-DC get together (our first in-person gathering since Feb. 2020!).
