Mostly cynical, but always astute observations of an American rediscovering America after living abroad for years.

Funny. Very funny. The Americanisms he points out are sometimes embarrassing and I fear they have only become more so in the years since the book was written.

It was located on a table in the reception area in the national office of Viet Nam Veterans of America. My husband is a national board member and we were there for a quarterly meeting. I was just waiting for him and noticed the book on the table. I was very excited to read it because we live and travel in a motorhome, and I was curious to compare our experiences and impressions with the author's. The book was published in 1989 and we have done our cross-country traveling in the last few years.

Because the book was written in 1989, I sometimes found great disparity between what was and what is (at least from my viewpoint seeing many of the locations during recent years). Obviously time changes some places, some not. I sometimes found myself getting angry at the authori, Bill Bryson, thinking, "Of all the nerve, you left America and now come back to critize." But, I also found myself laughing and nodding, "Right on, brother," in many of his descriptions of the places and people. It was definitely an interesting read, especially for someone who has also traveled the country. I am going to drop this book off in a campground in Key West (Sigsbee Naval Air Station.

Bill Bryson gives a strange account of traveling around the US. At first I thought he was funny but then it got tiring and on the edge of insulting. I'll be on the lookout for that chevette in my motorhome.
